The sky loses its gray and starts to blossom slowly with color. It’s very pretty, the sky, but too low—they keep bonking their heads on it. By the time it’s darkened to night, the sky is so low they have to hunch to get underneath.

“Stoop,” says Patches.

“Crouch,” answers Zelda.

“Squat.”

“Maybe…” Langston says, getting down on his knees to look up at the cosmos that is just brushing his nose. “Maybe the universe is a balloon? And we’re inside it as it’s deflating?” He takes his notebook out and scribbles something in it.

“Seems worrisome,” says Zelda.

Patches says,

“How now, that this celestial sphere

was once up there,

but now, down here?”
